The dance-pop track spent three weeks at the top spot of Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay Chart in May 2007.[2] In the U.s., it is the 2nd unmarried from September's album September, succeeding "Satellites" (a number eight hit on the Dance Airplay chart), while overseas it is her fifth single release from her 2d studio album In Orbit, post-obit "It Doesn't Matter". It is also a unmarried from diverse compilation albums released in Europe.

The unmarried was a huge success in Sweden as well every bit the remainder of Europe, and tin can be considered her biggest hit yet, together with "Satellites". In her homeland of Sweden, "Cry for You" peaked at the number 6 position on the Swedish Summit 60 Singles Chart for two weeks in a row. It remained on the singles chart in Sweden for 17 non-sequent weeks.

As of Nov 2010, "Weep for Yous" has been certified Gold in the United States for sales of over 500,000 copies, making September the start Swedish singer to receive a Aureate certification in the Us since Ace of Base's 1998 hit "Vicious Summer".

In late 2018, well-nigh 12 years after its release, the vocal was turned into a meme on Twitter, cheers to its "you'll never run across me again" lyrics.[3]

Composition and release [edit]

Before the worldwide release in 2007, September had originally recorded the song for her studio anthology In Orbit (2005). Even so, in many compilations September has released, the vocal has appeared on her compilations including September, Dancing in Orbit, Gold and Cry for You - The Album. According to September, she explained the reason why she wanted to release information technology worldwide, by saying "The song was so stiff past itself. And I've been in that location and it feels similar the fans are starved of dance music. Just now dance music is coming back again, and the world is getting smaller and smaller because of the net – that now sometimes you don't even have to do much promotion, although obviously information technology is nevertheless very of import. But I think that a hit song volition ever detect a way."[4]

In an interview with Digital Spy, they asked about the groundwork of the song, when she replied:[4]

"It'due south about when you lot're washed with relationship. A lot of people write to me and say 'Information technology'south really emotional and I feel so much for the vocal because my boyfriend la la la', which is really nice for me, even though I didn't write the lyrics. I've had a lot of experiences like that so that'south what gives me the nervus to sing it."

The song features a dance-pop,[five] Europop[6] [seven] and house[viii] sound and has been compared to Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Male child" and its sampled analogue, "Tell Me Why" by Supermode, although possible similarities have been declared unintended.[9]

Critical reception [edit]

"Weep for You" received positive reviews from music critics. Nick Levine from Digital Spy awarded the vocal with 4 stars out of five, giving it a positive review. He stated "[...] it'south a surprisingly affecting Eurodance number, a record that'due south both relentlessly danceable and desperately sad" and said its "actually a pretty decent tape."[10] All the same, he felt the song was not "original" enough to outbet releases by boyfriend Swedish singer Robyn. Popjustice said the song is a "massive balls-out club canticle and nosotros recall it works rather well."[11] Ben Norman from Near.com called the song the "Best Dance Crossover Track", while proverb "Robbins [Entertainment] has since made peace with me by backing and promoting Swedish singer September and this Europop confection. Proficient job guys!."[12]

AllMusic had rated the song three-and-a-half-stars out of five stars.[13] K. Ross Hoffman, as well from AllMusic, had highlighted the song as an album standout, and said "'Cry [for You]' is the obvious standout, managing to conjure both sophistication and a surprising caste of emotion from its adequately pedestrian frothy electro-pop arrangement and polished only powerful song turn."[fourteen] However, he too added "'Weep for You' is a strong plenty track (though fairly faceless too, in its manner) [...]." PopBytes.com gave information technology a positive review, saying it's "total popular trip the light fantastic fluff but highly enjoyable."[fifteen]

The video intercuts between September and one of the clones singing the song, while another clone dances atop a podium. On the bridge, one of the clones breaks ranks.
